EDITING SERVICES IN ENGLISH
The term editing covers a range of services. It can refer to substantial editing, where the content is significantly revised. It can mean copyediting, which looks at spelling and grammar, language-use, style, consistency and formatting. Copy-editors may also prepare a style guide for you, and will check the accuracy of any references, citations and facts. In some cases, texts written by different authors must be harmonised to ensure consistent spelling, style and terminology.
Proofreading, on the other hand, is usually the final step before publication and involves checking the text for minor, typographical errors. It comes after copyediting in the pre-publication work flow. Confused about the difference? Download the CIEP’s handy guide here.
I mostly work on texts written by non-native speakers of English, but I can provide the above services to any individual or organisation looking to publish texts in English. As well as having a key eye for detail, I have undertaken courses in copyediting, proofreading and developmental editing with the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) in the UK.
